ESH&Q Principal Professional and Engineer
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Operated by Battelle Memorial Institute for the U.S. Department of Energy

Evelyn Hirt holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, cum laude from the University of Detroit (now University of Detroit Mercy) and a Masters in Engineering Management from Washington State University (WSU). She was awarded a Certificate in Project Management from WSU and completed the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) 3-year Management Skills Development Program. Her honors include listings in ten "Who's Who" directories, and twelve outstanding performance awards while working for three different employers. While at the University of Detroit, she was inducted as a member of the HKN Beta Sigma Chapter.

Evelyn has published works in the application of laser ablation, test program requirements management, fault-tree-generation methodology, and time dissemination using the Global Positioning System (GPS). Her professional experiences bridge the industrial, government, and academic communities, as well as leadership positions in professional technical societies. Her decades-long career in engineering is multi disciplinary, however, her interests center on systems and controls, and engineering management. She has been a technical contributor and responsible for strategic planning, day-to-day operations, and project/program management.

Evelyn joined Battelle at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) as a Project Managerand is currently a ESH&Q Principal Professional and Engineer specializing in systems and controls. While at PNNL, she has functioned as a project manager, technical contributor, quality engineer, and quality manager. She presently leads the software quality engineering team and has managed teams of up to twelve quality professionals. Her professional expertise is presently being applied to a wide variety of research, development, deployment, and management system activities. The primary focus of her current assignment is strategic planning, performance measurement, and providing subject matter expertise.

Prior to Battelle, Evelyn was employed as a consulting engineer for BDM International, Inc. where her activities included project management; system specification, design, analysis, test, and deployment of commercial and government systems and processes; BDM laboratory operations; contract performance evaluation and surveillance for clients; and strategic planning. Prior to BDM, she was an electrical engineering research assistant in control systems at the University of New Mexico (UNM). Before UNM, Evelyn was a systems engineer in the specification, design, and analysis of flight control systems for Sperry Corporation, Defense Systems Division. Prior to Sperry, she was an engineer/scientist in systems engineering for Rockwell International Corporation, Collins Division on the GPS User Equipment Program. Evelyn was an electrical/electronics engineer, prior to Collins, in various aspects of flight and fire control man-in-the-loop simulation activities for the United States Air Force (USAF), Wright Aeronautical Laboratories, Flight Dynamics Division. Prior to the USAF, she was an electrical engineer with General Motors Corporation, Fisher Body Division, Central Engineering working in product and process design, and product testing.

Evelyn is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Member of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), and the Order of the Engineer. Volunteering significantly in the technical professional arena, she has served on the IEEE Board of Directors (2003-2004) and as Vice-Chair for Strategic Planning on the IEEE Regional Activities Board (2004-2005). Evelyn is currently the Editor in-Chief of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronics Systems Magazine, the IEEE Region 6 Women in Engineering Coordinator, and the Co-Chair of the IEEE Nanoelectronics Standards Roadmap (NESR) Initiative. Evelyn is also collaborating with the faculty of Washington State Tri-Cities (WSU-TC) in promoting their new full, four-year undergraduate bachelors program in electrical engineering and in attracting new faculty for electrical engineering and computer science. Evelyn was inducted into the Beta Sigma chapter of Eta Kappa Nu at the University of Detroit. ÄÔ
