The HKN Board defines projects of substantial importance to students, Chapters, and the organization and suggests that student members participate. Examples of current projects include HKN long-range planning as well as research on the impact of globalization on ECE careers. Exceptional chapter performance and participation in such projects is acknowledged.
Chapters set criteria for, and select recipients of, awards given for outstanding teacher, outstanding pledge, or outstanding high-school student. Chapters also give awards to participants of local science fairs for entries and exhibits in the fields of electrical or computer engineering.
Services can range from individual tutoring to class or seminar instruction. Off-campus tutoring can be provided to high-school students. Student members also program computers and make them available for high-school students' use.
Chapters give gifts, including financial donations, to deserving institutions or charities and/or provide modest scholarships to outstanding high-school or college students pursuing courses related to electrical and computer engineering.
Chapters have successfully used many different methods to raise funds. Examples include the following:
- Offering insurance against breakage of laboratory equipment
- Obtaining and renting used gym lockers
- Building and renting mailboxes to students
- Holding coffee and doughnut sales
Chapter members provide guidance to high-school students on careers in engineering. On-campus members can arrange the following:
- Freshman orientation courses in engineering
- Vocational and job-counseling symposiums
- Forums on employment and the interview process
- The preparation of a volume of resumes for job-seeking seniors
Chapter members participate as tour guides and demonstrate electrical, computer, or electronic equipment and displays. Some members construct exhibits related to electrical and computer engineering.
Student surveys are conducted to evaluate courses and instructors. The chapter designs questionnaires and compiles the results. Some chapters organize ECE test files grouped by instructor, subject, and course title. The files are open for the student body's use.
Chapters may invite speakers from industry for student-faculty seminars. This is a good way to link with alumni who are HKN members. This is also an activity that can be undertaken jointly with other societies such as TAU BETA PI.
All chapters are encouraged to nominate a candidate for the following:
- The Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Award
- The Outstanding Teaching Award
- The Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Award
- The Outstanding Teaching Award
Off-campus chapter activities include the following:
- Providing holiday gifts for under-privileged children
- Building electrical aids for impaired individuals (one chapter donated a closed-circuit TV reading aid that it designed and built for the visually impaired)
- Securing electronic and other test equipment for use in local vocational high-school courses
- Organizing holiday parties for children at a local hospital
- Visiting patients in nursing homes or hospitals
- Induction banquet
- Pledge mixers
- Student-faculty sports
- Picnics
- Dances
