HKN Second Century Project
Overview
As we move into Eta Kappa Nu's second century all Student Chapters are invited to participate in an HKN Second Century Project that will help plan the future direction of HKN.

HKN student members will provide structured input on the future direction of HKN. Similar input has been received from faculty advisors and department chairs, and now it is the students' opportunity to influence HKN planning.

In addition to gathering valuable information from students, this Second Century Project is intended to offer students a valuable leadership and teamwork experience. Participating Chapters will gain valuable industrial experience working on this project. Students will learn the mechanics and subtleties of an effective planning process similar to those implemented by corporations to gauge the future and determine the potential of new ideas for products and services.

All student members are encouraged to participate, thus gaining valuable experience in implementing a widely used planning and market forecasting tool.

By participating, an HKN Chapter will meet one of the requisite criteria for the Outstanding Chapter Award.

The HKN Board appreciates very much the efforts of all participating Student Chapter Members.

The HKN Second Century Project is composed of two phases. The first is the Collaborative Phase, similar to a brainstorming session, will be held in January through mid February. The objective of the Collaborative Phase is to gather and rate as many ideas as possible on each of these five questions.

  1. What is the most important purpose of HKN?
  2. What benefits should HKN offer student members?
  3. How can HKN help student members better prepare for their careers?
  4. How can your chapter better serve society, other ECE students, and their ECE departments?
  5. What benefits should HKN provide to you after your graduation?
At each participating Chapter, all graduate and undergraduate student members will participate in a meeting to list many ideas for each question. And then they will rate each idea. After collecting the inputs from all participating Chapters, HKN Headquarters will provide a first cut of members' thoughts on the future of HKN.

Information gathered from Chapters' responses will be analyzed by headquarters' staff. Ideas receiving the most support from chapters will be included in the questionnaire.

The Questionnaire Phase Two will take place in March. Each member will receive an individual questionnaire that will permit them to rate the most promising ideas gathered from all HKN chapters throughout the country during the Collaborative Phase.

Results
Headquarters would like to thank the 30 chapters and 220 individuals who participated in Phases I and II of the Second Century Project. Your responses were thoughtful and insightful. We hope that you were able to reflect on your personal contributions to your chapter, university, society, and Eta Kappa Nu as an organization too. We have analyzed the data from the Phase II survey and compiled it into a list of action items that we at HQ will implement or continue to implement. As always, we are open to other suggestions and ideas at any time so feel free to contact the office.
