NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J - April 25, 2005 - Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the honor society for electrical and computer engineers, has announced its selection of Dr. Joseph J. Bordogna as its Eminent Member for 2005.
Bordogna, deputy director and chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., was honored at the HKN awards banquet on April 11, 2005, in New Brunswick, N.J. The Eminent Member Award, the highest honor bestowed by HKN, is given to those whose achievements and leadership in electrical and computer engineering have resulted in significant benefits to humankind.
The award recognizes the Philadelphia-area resident for a career that has spanned more than 45 years as an engineer and educator. He began his academic career in the 1960s as a professor of electrical engineering at Pennsylvania State University, where he became dean in 1981.
In 1990, Bordogna was named director of engineering for the National Science Foundation (NSF), and he assumed his current duties there in 1999. The NSF is a federal agency chartered to promote the progress of science and research in the United States.
Bordogna is the author of two books. He is also is a member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has remained actively involved with the group. Bordogna is also an IEEE Fellow and received the group's 1984 Centennial Medal. Further, he is a former president of the IEEE Education Society and served as a member of its committee on Public Understanding of Technology.
In 1993, Bordogna was elected to the American Society of Engineering Education Hall of Fame and is a recipient of the society's George Westinghouse Award. He is also a fellow of the International Engineering Consortium.
Additionally, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers awarded Bordogna its gold medal in 2001, and the Semiconductor Industry Association awarded him its Leadership Award in 2004.
