Distinguished Service Award

2003 Award Recipient

Robert H. Arehart
Robert H. Arehart was initiated in 1949 into the Beta Alpha Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu at Drexel University. After graduation in 1951, he joined the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter. Arehart advanced through the offices of the alumni chapter, eventually becoming president in 1970. The alumni chapter met monthly and held luncheon meetings, where a speaker always made a presentation of interest to all. The president ran the meetings, and the vice president obtained the monthly luncheon speakers.

In 1970, Arehart organized and promoted an area HKN undergraduate chapter visitation at Drexel University's lodge outside Philadelphia. This was a meeting of the officers of nine local undergraduate chapters.

Arehart served onthe national Board of Governors as the Eastern Region director from 1986 to 1988. He then served as HKN national vice president from 1989 to 1990 and national president from 1990 to 1991. During his tenure as president, the board established the Vladimir Karapetoff Outstanding Technical Achievement Award.

After a year in which the HKN C. Holmes MacDonald Outstanding Teaching Award was not presented (1988), Arehart brought together a committee to resurrect the award. In 1989, Arehart was named chair of this committee. Arehart arranged for support from Drexel University, which supplied an administrator to help with the award details. As chairman, he provided many articles and pictures of the award winners to "The Bridge" magazine.

Arehart has been very active in the expansion of HKN. He installed the Iota Phi Chapter at West Point, the Iota Psi Chapter at New York Institute of Technology - Old Westbury, the Kappa Beta Chapter at Wilkes University, the Kappa Epsilon Chapter at the State University of New York - Binghamton, the Kappa Zeta Chapter at New York Institution of Technology - New York City, the Kappa Mu Chapter at Capitol College, and the Kappa Xi Chapter at the University of South Florida. Arehart also provided articles and pictures of these installations to "The Bridge". In May 1993, Arehart inducted Merril W. Buckley, Jr., IEEE President, into HKN as a professional member.
