The following are the key new initiatives for 2007-2008:
Regional Student Leadership Conferences
The student leadership conference, "HKN Discusses Leadership Skills for your Future," hosted by Beta Chapter at Purdue University in November 2006 was very successful. Nearly 70 students from 13 chapters from New York to Texas participated in keynote lectures by distinguished engineers, team projects, a tour of the Birck Nanotechnology Center, a Chapter Development Panel, a career workshop, and networking among the chapters. The response was so enthusiastic that Mu Chapter, University of California, Berkeley, and Gamma Theta, University of Missouri, Rolla, will host regional conferences in Fall 2007.
Thanks to HKN's contributors, there was no registration fee to participants. HQ hopes to continue these conferences with little or no cost to the students.
Continued Expansion of the HKN Web Site
HKN staff continuously gathers material to keep the HKN Web site updated and to make it the first place members visit for member, chapter, and organizational news. The awards program publicizes winners and offers nomination forms online for outstanding achievements. Most chapters are linked on the Chapter Directory and the officers and contact information changes regularly. Chapters that submit the Annual Chapter Report electronically also have their activities linked to their pages. The career section will take a great leap forward when HKN launches its career database powered by Experience Inc. Many alumni visit the site to update their information.
Another goal is to reacquaint alumni members who have fallen out of touch with the organization. We have reached out to industry executives through our International Engineering Consortium affiliation and continue to update our database with new addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. If you are in contact with HKN members with whom we may have lost touch, please direct them to
http://hkn.org/updateinfo/index.asp to update their information. Students benefit from role models and contacts in the professional world and we encourage companies to work along side and recruit from the HKN membership, as they know they will be receiving qualified applicants. We strive to keep HKN the elite Honor Society it always has been.
THE BRIDGE Magazine has undergone an amazing transformation over the past couple of issues. Barry Sullivan, the new Editor of
THE BRIDGE, has reached out to distinguished leaders in the engineering world for article contributions. We plan to expand the magazine to include more informational articles and HKN news. If your subscription has run out, please consider renewing it. This is a great way to keep in touch with the organization, its activities, and its members.

HKN will launch a career database and management center powered by Experience Inc. in Fall 2007. The database will offer entry-level through advanced positions for which HKN members can apply directly or upload their resumes for companies to search. Many companies have contacted the HKN office to recruit members and this will give them the opportunity to focus their search. HKN members can also post open positions in their companies specifically to other HKN members at no charge. Content is also a key piece of this partnership. Experience Inc. offers job shadowing, internships, executive interviews, articles and tips on interviews, resumes, and job searches and much more for the current student as well as someone that is already in the workforce. This will help keep alumni engaged and is in direct response to the Second Century Project results.
HKN's Annual Campaign is important in ensuring the implementation of these initiatives. All contributors will receive progress updates and will be listed in the brochure of 2007-2008 Annual Campaign Contributors, THE BRIDGE magazine, and online.
